WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT 2025 RENT INCREASES IN GTA
In 2025, Ontario has set a rent increase cap of 2.5% for most rental units. This applies to units that were first occupied before November 15, 2018, as those remain under rent control. For newer units, built after that date, there are no rent increase restrictions, and landlords can increase rent at their discretion.
For properties built before November 15, 2018, in Ontario, rent control regulations still apply. This means landlords can only increase rent by a capped amount, which for 2025 is set at 2.5%. These properties are considered "exempt" from the higher rent increases allowed for newer constructions (built after this date), where there are no rent control limits.
